Astrophysics Inc., a global leader in x-ray inspection systems, has been awarded a long-term, ₱ 1.2 billion contract (valued at $23.8 million USD) with the Republic of the Philippines Bureau of Customs (BOC). The contract includes conventional X-Ray Inspection Systems (XIS), XIS-TrailersTM, and HXP-FreightScanTM cargo screeners for deployment at airports and seaports across the country.

“The x-ray scanners are expected to further enhance the capability of BOC in detecting smuggled and anti-social goods like misdeclared items, undervalued goods, non-declared goods, as well as the entry of narcotics in various ports nationwide,” said BOC Commissioner Ray Leonardo Guerrero.

The partnership was spearheaded by Astrophysics Asia, Astrophysics’ local office in Manila. The Astrophysics program management team worked closely with the Philippine government to coordinate logistics, design checkpoint layouts, manage site surveys, and supervise construction and installation, which began earlier this year.

“This project is a reflection of Astrophysics’ excellence in the industry,” said Mark Zayek, COO of Astrophysics. “We’ve combined the most innovative cargo screening technology, complete site and system integration, and best-in-class service to provide the most comprehensive and quality security solution for the BOC.”

The Astrophysics systems installed in the Philippines will significantly strengthen its borders and enable the BOC to perform non-intrusive inspections of container shipments and baggage of any size as it enters the country. Their comprehensive imaging tools will make it possible for customs agents to analyze shipments with greater speed and accuracy, ensuring maximum threat detection at airports, seaports, and other points of entry.
