COVID-19 & the Rise of Global Security Threats

The world faces an unprecedented convergence of international threats and societal instability. High-intensity conflict and volatility span the globe, both institutionally and economically due to COVID-19’s severe impact on global security. The COVID-19 pandemic has put “regular” life on pause. However, the need for safety practices and security solutions has only heightened.

In the spring of 2020, UN risk consultancy Sibylline and experts on crime and terrorism released a report highlighting physical security, societal security (e.g. protests and civil unrest), and cybersecurity as growing concerns. The threat of violence, extremist activity, health concerns, and overwhelming unpredictability has created a complex operating environment that is both vulnerable and susceptible to threats. Violent protests and aggression in the U.S. and abroad have been targeted against governments, businesses, and other organizations. In London, 600 protestors, affiliated with the Extinction Rebellion Protest group, were arrested for disgruntled gatherings at city-wide government buildings. Gold Commander Kyle Gordon stated of the event, “organizers of these events have not taken all reasonable measures to limit the risk of transmission of coronavirus, thereby posing a risk, not only to those involved, but the wider public and communities of London”. In response, government officials and sectors worldwide are rapidly preparing new protocols and safety measures to combat these health threats and security risks.

A popular safety and security measure is compartmentalizing checkpoints by limiting the number of people at a site via controlled facility access points and securing egress points. Organizations are utilizing key x-ray systems, metal detectors, CCTV cameras, ID badges, and even biometric screening to limit possible threats while facilitating COVID-19 safety protocols. Compartmentalizing checkpoints via controlled entries and exits are designed to process only a few people at a time, ensuring thorough inspections while maintaining social distancing between individuals.

These alternative access points also allow security personnel to carry out COVID-19 safety checks and temperature screenings. Astrophysics offers Safety Shields and Safety Kits for protection against the spread of harmful germs, specifically COVID-19. Designed to physically separate screening personnel from the public, the Safety Shield barriers safeguard normal business, and security interactions.  For efficient sanitary inspections, pair our Safety Shield with our new Safety Kit to minimize contact and prevent the spread of germs between operators and the general public. The Astrophysics Safety Kit includes an AOCP Film Cover, TSA Qualified Tray, and Product-Safe Cleaning Supplies.

Security can never be compromised. To provide safety and deliver comprehensive solutions, Astrophysics’ x-ray scanners identify threats in our communities and cities, ensuring the safety and security of critical infrastructure sites worldwide. Our checkpoint systems provide security solutions to schools, government facilities, hotels, corporations, and high-traffic transportation sites delivering safety and peace of mind.
