Astrophysics X-RAY Scanners
We manufacture over 40 x-ray scanners, divided into 6 major categories:
  1. Mail & Small Parcel
  2. Checkpoint
  3. Hold Baggage
  4. Cargo
  5. Mobile
  6. Vehicle & Freight
See our Products page for more information about each category.
Our x-ray systems follow a simple naming structure. Our conventional x-ray scanners start with XIS (“X-ray Inspection System”) followed by a set of numbers. The numbers indicate the unit’s tunnel size (i.e. XIS-6040 has a tunnel opening that measures 60 cm x 40 cm). Our vehicle and cargo screening portals start with either HXC (“High-Energy Cargo”) or HXP (“High-Energy Portal”). Their names describe their function: the HXC-LaneScan™ screens passenger vehicles in standard traffic lanes, the HXP-FreightScan™ screens freight containers, the HXP-TotalScan™ screen freight containers and the driver, and the HXM-MobileScan™ is a mobile portal. Our MVCT™ stands for Multi-View Computed Tomography.
To ensure optimal threat detection, our x-ray systems come with more industry-leading features than any other systems on the market. Visit our Technology page for information about the standard and optional features offered on our machines.
Our products run on a Windows operating system. We believe the Windows platform provides customers a more user-friendly experience, since it makes our scanners compatible with most PCs and many operators are already familiar with the operating system.
Yes, we work closely with our customers to understand and design security solutions specific to their needs. If an existing model does not sufficiently meet those needs, we will customize it to ensure it meets their security mission.

The most important features to consider when choosing an x-ray system are the tunnel size, generator power, steel penetration, wire resolution and imaging features. Our expert Sales team can work with you to find the perfect scanner for your security mission. Contact us at sales@astrophysicsinc.com for a copy of our whitepaper, How to Choose an x-ray Machine and to help walk you through the process.
We offer GSA pricing for qualified customers. See GSA Schedule Contract GS-07F-0182T for more information.
Product brochures are available for all Astrophysics systems. You can request a brochure by visiting our Product pages. Click on “Download Brochure” and fill out the fields on the pop-up menu. Once you complete the form, click “Submit.” Brochures will be provided once form is submitted.
Lead times vary depending upon the model and availability. Please contact the Astrophysics Sales Team for more information. We pride ourselves in having some of the best lead times in the industry.
Our Sales Team completes a questionnaire prior to each installation, collecting detailed information on the site to ensure a smooth installation. For larger projects, an Astrophysics Field Service Technician will complete a site survey.
Service and Support
Our global dealer network includes over 1,000 trained and certified Field Service Technicians operating in over 150 countries.
Response time is based on our local dealer, service contracts, which can differ according to region. Depending on the contract selected, the time for service can range from 2 hours to 5 business days.
Standard operator training is performed by Field Service personnel after system installation is complete. The course lasts 1-2 hours and provides an overview of the system’s mechanics, basic troubleshooting and imaging features. (Additional costs may apply).
North American standard manufacturing warranties last 13 months from the scanner shipment date. International manufacturing warranties last 15 months from the scanner shipment date. You can also purchase additional coverage, including an upgraded response time during your warranty period by contacting our service team.
Computer-based training (CBT) is an interactive and self-paced course that improves operators’ threat awareness. By using machine-specific simulators and an extensive library of over 1,000 images, the course improves operators’ identification and response times when reviewing images for threats. For convenience, the courses can be run on any standard computer as well as any Astrophysics units. (Additional costs may apply)
Astrophysics offers preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, radiation surveys and system upgrades. All our services are carried out by our team of certified Astrophysics Field Service Technicians who operate across the globe, ready to provide immediate customer assistance. Our systems share uniform components, which result in lower maintenance costs and shorter wait times for parts.
Safety
An x-ray generator is the main energy source in an x-ray scanner. They pass electricity through a heat filament to produce gamma x-rays that penetrate objects and allow operators to inspect their contents. Astrophysics x-ray scanners are equipped with 1 or 2 generators, these in turn produce a single or dual view of the scanned object.
Our scanners adhere to strict radiation safety standards. The radiation used in our machines is well below the minimum safety levels mandated by government agencies.
Our scanners have numerous safety features including interlocks, operator foot mats, protective lead paneling, emergency stops (e-stops), warning lights and key switches.
Extensive testing has been conducted on cell phones, computers, and film exposed to radiation. All the tests have concluded that Astrophysics’ x-ray scanners do not cause any damage to these components or equipment.
